Grilling is fun. It’s about going back to our caveman days and cooking the captured prey on the open flame pit. You get all the neighborhood cave dwellers to gather round the big flames of fire and brag about their best grilling episodes. What could be more entertaining?
My wife Diane and her love of Beringer Founders’ Estate Cabernet Sauvignon inspired me to find the perfect pairing for the Great Steak Challenge. While overseas with the Army, I tried many different steak dishes and always managed to coax the secret ingredients from the various chefs, though I never got the exact measures from them. Over time, I would try the recipes on our military friends who offered suggestions for improvement. After countless tweaks, I have finally found the perfect recipe – one that I keep pasted to our kitchen cabinet. This is that recipe, which I have named in honor of my youngest brother Gerard who recently passed away at age 51 and was a hero to me.
I’m originally from the City of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (Go Steelers!) but after entering the army in 1971, I traveled overseas for 17 years. We currently reside in the small rural town of Palmyra, Virginia. Accompanying me to the Great Steak Challenge will be my lovely wife Diane who after 32 years of marriage is going to keep me under control and will still love me whether I win or go down in flames.
